Before you ever look at a fin or a spot, one question quietly cuts the field of possible species nearly in half: did this fish come from fresh water or salt water? Habitat is the most powerful filter you have, because the vast majority of species are committed to one or the other. Learn to read the tells and you'll narrow an ID before the camera even comes out.
Start with where you are
The single most useful clue costs nothing: where did you find the fish? A mountain stream, a farm pond, a lowland river — these are freshwater by default. A tidal flat, a kelp line, a reef, an open coast — saltwater. An estuary or river mouth is the gray zone where the two mix, and where the rules get interesting.
This context alone eliminates whole families. A fish from a landlocked lake simply cannot be a reef species, no matter how similar it looks to one. When you record where you found a fish, you hand the matcher a filter that does a lot of the work.
Visual tells (use with care)
There's no foolproof way to read salinity off a fish's body, but some patterns lean one way:
- Coloration. Many coral-reef fish wear vivid, high-contrast colors; a lot of freshwater fish run to browns, olives, and silvers that match tannin-stained or sediment-rich water. This is a tendency, not a rule — plenty of exceptions exist.
- Body armor and spines. Strong defensive spines and tough scutes are common in many marine groups exposed to a wide range of predators.
- Build. Open-ocean fish often have deeply forked tails and streamlined bodies built for sustained cruising; many freshwater fish are shaped for short bursts around structure.
Treat these as hints that raise or lower your confidence, never as proof.
The fish that break the rule
Nature keeps things honest with species that live in both worlds. Diadromous fish migrate between fresh and salt water during their life cycle:
- Anadromous species, like salmon, are born in fresh water, mature at sea, and return to rivers to spawn.
- Catadromous species, like many eels, do the reverse — growing in fresh water and spawning in the sea.
For these, habitat alone won't settle the ID, because you might encounter the same species in a river one season and near the coast in another. There are also euryhaline fish that tolerate a broad range of salinity and roam through estuaries freely.

1. Record the location — water type, and whether it's tidal or landlocked. 2. Let it rule things out before you weigh visual features. 3. Stay alert near river mouths, where freshwater and saltwater species overlap and migratory fish pass through. 4. Lean on body features to make the final call, using habitat as the frame rather than the answer.
